Introduction:

We're back with equations with one unknown, but this time we will see a much more exciting kind of them.

The example:

We are going to learn about equations with one unknown that have parentheses. Today we are going to work with this equation:

2(x + 16) = 54

Like any other equation, we are searching for the unknown - x.

The new thing here is that we start solving the problem by expanding the parentheses. We made it like this:

First, we multiply the number outside the parentheses by each of the numbers inside: 2x

2 x 16

Next, we add the two equations.

Rule:  

We add the equations because the sign between the numbers in the parentheses is +

2(x + 16) = 54

Finally, the equation becomes like this:

2x + 2 x 16 = 54

We see that this is a kind of easy equation because when we solve 2x16 it becomes like this:

2x + 32 = 54

The last solution:

If you want, you can try to solve the rest of the solution on your own and then check, but anyway I am going to show it :

2x + 32 = 54
2x = 54 - 32
2x = 22
X = 22 : 2
X = 11
