Introduction:

An equation with two unknowns is more exciting than with one unknown because it is more challenging.

The equation:

There are different kinds of equations with two unknowns. The most popular is this, where you have to tell one unknown from the other. Maybe you don't understand. Here you can see an example:

4.x + 6.y = 48
Y = 2.x

Here we see two equations. I'm going to tell you something that can be used in every kind of equation.

The thing:

If you have two unknowns, you need two equations to find the answer. In my example, we have two equations and two unknowns - x and y. That means that we can easily solve it.

The solution:

Back to the exercise, we can see that we have another way to express y : 2x. Now, if we look again at the first equation, we can tell y is 2x. Now we have:

4.x + 6.(2.x) = 48

Now we have a hard equation with one unknown.

First, we remove the parentheses, and the equation becomes like this:

4.x + 6.2.x = 48

So when we solve 6 . 2, which is 12, we see that now the exercise is like this:

4.x + 12.x = 48

We come to the middle hard equations with one unknown.

And we solve it like this:

4.x + 12.x = 48
16.x = 48
X = 48 : 16
X = 3

When we now x, we can easily find y:

Y = 2.x
=>  Y = 2.3
    Y = 6

The answer:

Now we know the answer

X = 3
Y = 6
